  • My backgrounds in performing arts and management really come in handy at my job, even if they’re in seemingly different domains. Skills like effective communication and project management might not seem important to data analysis, but they make a huge difference. Don’t take people or management skills for granted. Especially as AI increasingly supports us on the technical side, it’s also valuable to develop creative skills that can enhance your work.

  • Figure out what software or programming languages are being used in the field you’re interested in, and start learning them. There are so many resources available now to learn most tools for free, and you can do it in your own time. Python and Tableau are two examples of powerful tools that can enhance data analysis and visualization in my job, but it’s also important to keep track of when the go-to tools change. By becoming proficient in the technical work, you can increase your marketability and effectiveness in many future careers.

  • Curiosity is the secret sauce in STEM. Careers in this space can be extremely rewarding, but they also require a lot of commitment, so it’s important to take the time to find out what topics you care about. A big part of STEM careers is continuing to learn, and being excited to keep learning. What do you want to learn?
