Traveling.

I grew up in Mexico, attended university in the US, moved across the US for work, and now I’m in Finland! I see myself as a citizen of the world. I love experiencing new cultures and meeting people of different backgrounds.

Dancing.

I love listening to music and dancing in my kitchen. Dancing gives me energy and makes me feel alive.

Family.

I love spending time with my family. Getting married and starting a family has been an adventure. I’m the proud mom of two and I’ve been really intentional about making career choices that allow me to both spend time with my family and focus on passion projects. We’re even filming a TV show together!

Fashion.

I love playing with different styles and using clothes to express myself. One of my Youtube series, ‘The Science of High Heels’ was seen by Oprah and really kickstarted my career in science communication.

Science Communication.

I love the art of making complicated scientific concepts accurate yet understandable. The blend of performing for live audiences, on television, and blogging to make science more accessible to all audiences keeps me on my toes and has led to some of my life’s greatest adventures.

A Little About Me

I have struggled with anxiety and feeling like I don’t belong.

I was the first woman at Stanford to get a PhD in physics, which meant that I was also a minority in that space. I focused on believing in myself and growing from these experiences.
I feel a strong calling to be a role model to inspire young women to be themselves in science.

I’ve focused on learning the skills that I need to serve my broader life mission of inspiring women and girls in STEM. I continue to develop educational tools in my year abroad in Finland where I'm creating a course for women in data science.
I write, speak, and perform to make scientific ideas more accessible to everyone.

I wanted others to be inspired by science. That’s why I started public speaking, hosting science TV shows, and blogging as a science communicator.

To gain more research experience, I applied myself at Illumina. I started in a part-time position but worked my way to a full-time research position.
